Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest is a comic satire on the superficial earnestness of turn-of-the-century Victorian society. It tells the tale of two young men who have taken to bending the truth to get what they want. Jack has invented an imaginary brother, Ernest, whom he uses as an excuse to escape from his dull country home to frolic in town. Algernon uses a similar technique with an imaginary friend to provide a convenient escape route to adventures in the countryside. Their parallel deceptions eventually collide in a series of crises, which promise to foil their amorous pursuits. Earnest is one of the most celebrated of all stage comedies and is a testament to the decency and warmth beneath Wilde's trademark sharp-tongued dialogue. Wilde called this "A Trivial Comedy for Serious People".
