THE GIN GAME
by D. L. Coburn
Finding married couple Norman A. Hall and Shirley Nilsen Hall on stage together is a long awaited event by friends, fans, and fellow-actors as they have both been a main-stay of Bay Area theater for more than twenty-five years, working at The Barn in Ross Valley, at Novato Theater Company, at Santa Rosa's 6th Street Playhouse, and in various theaters in Marin, Sonoma, San Francisco, and the East Bay.
The Gin Game is Rick Coburn's much loved two-person tragicomedy that takes place in a "home for the aged," where residents Fonsia and Weller get to know one another over the constant shuffling of cards. Weller's time-bomb temper generates hilarious moments, as well as pathos, when he again, and again, wrestles with Fonsia's ability at the game. The two find relief from boredom and loneliness while commiserating over the state of their estates, until nerves shatter as their regret-filled pasts are revealed.
The Gin Game earned a Pulitzer Prize in 1978 when first produced with Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn, also a married couple. Revised in 1997 with Charles Durning and Julie Harris, it won a Tony. Mary Tyler Moore and Dick Van Dyke took their turn as the two feisty elders in PBS television.
