Noises Off is a play within a play. Each of the three acts of Noises Off is a performance of the first act of Nothing On (the “story play”). From an inept dress rehearsal to a bungling performance 40 weeks later, we see how the personal off- stage chaos affects on-stage performance, with a great deal of comedy in the process. In theater, the term "noises off" specifies sounds that are meant to originate offstage. However, we are privy to the offstage goings-on, and understand the on-stage development, to our delight.
